ALYSSA SCHWANKE

Q1: Name: Alyssa Schwanke

      Degree from UMD: Organizational Management

      Current Job: Marketing Events Coordinator

Q2: As a senior at UMD, when did you start applying for jobs?

I started looking throughout my last semester at UMD.

Q3: What websites or resources did you use when you were applying?

I mainly used networking to help find a job, which helped me land my first job out of college. I worked there for 4 months and hated it! Eventually went on to use websites such as Indeed, LinkedIn Jobs, Monster.com, and even temp agencies. To this day, all of my jobs after college have happened through networking.

Q4:  If you could do anything differently about applying for jobs or the job market in general, what would it be?

Don't get discouraged, when it is right it will happen! You have the rest of your life to work and find an occupation that you enjoy. Relax throughout the process and trust yourself. Remember that you are qualified!! I wish I had more internship experience and hands on during my college career, I think that would have been very helpful for me.

Q5: Do you enjoy your job/profession at this time?

There are up days and down days for any job, and you aren't going to enjoy every aspect of your daily tasks - however I do currently enjoy my profession, it is a lot of fun and there is a lot of variety!

I also wanted to add that I was in a rut out of college trying to find out what I wanted to do, I went to Europe for 2 months in the summer to explore countries and learn about cultures. I found a part time job back in Duluth, then was hired full time as an Event Coordinator. However, between my part time job and getting my full time job, I decided to pursue a Masters degree! I will be finishing up my Masters in Educational Leadership in about 4 weeks, which was a great decision to do because it has opened up so many opportunities. Students need to keep in mind their morals and personal values when looking for jobs. While I do love my job, it is difficult living alone 3 hours away from my boyfriend and family. Since I am fortunate to have an undergraduate degree, and almost my masters, I have plenty of opportunities ahead of me if I choose to forego a new career path. Students will benefit from continuing learning, even if it is a book on a topic that interests them. Keep on learning!!!
